The first verse in Proverbs 31 that describes the good wife is verse 10. The verse says: “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” The first thing that sticks out to me about this verse is that a noble wife is hard to find. A noble wife is a treasure to her husband and is very valuable to him. Being a noble wife isn’t always easy, because if it were, being one wouldn’t be so rare. It takes effort, hard work, and self-discipline to be one.
So what does a noble wife look life? Noble is defined as: having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals. A noble wife respects her husband. She does not talk badly about him to her friends or complain about him. A noble wife has a good attitude. She does not complain about having to cook or clean. A noble wife follows God and seeks his will for her life. She spends time praying and reading the Bible. She makes it a priority. A noble wife is not selfish. She puts her husband and children before herself. A noble wife uses her resources wisely. She does not waste her family’s hard earned money. A noble wife manages her time wisely. She does not spend all day binge watching Netflix or scrolling Facebook. She makes sure things that need to get done are done. A noble wife lets her husband be the head of the household. She does not try to wear the pants in the relationship. She lets him take his God given role as leader of the family.
No wonder a noble wife is rare. It takes a lot of self-discipline to be one. I know I have failed at all of those aspects at one point or another. I am so thankful for God’s grace and forgiveness, because we are going to mess up. We are not perfect and we never will be, but we need to strive to be the kind of wife God wants us to be. Strive to be a wife that is a treasure to her husband.
The first step in learning to be a noble wife, is to put God first. Prioritize time with Him daily. Get up 30 minutes early to start your day with prayer and reading the Bible. I know the times in my life when I did not prioritize time with God, I really strayed away from having the characteristics of a noble wife. When you put God first, other things will fall into place.
Strength & Dignity Part 1 action item:
Rework your schedule and carve out quiet time with God. It doesn’t matter if it is in the morning, afternoon, or evening whatever works best for you. Just create the time. Pray for God to show you what areas you need to improve on as a wife and mother.
