Grocery Shopping Tips

I wanted to share a few basic grocery shopping tips that can help save you time and money.  By just doing a few simple tasks, you can gain a lot of benefits.  No crazy couponing or going from store to store to find the best deal.  Just simple, easy to implement practices.  It may seem like it won’t save you a lot of money at one time, but it adds up fast.  I cut our grocery bill in half this past month just by doing a little extra planning.

Shop the Weekly Specials.  I feel like this is a no brainer, but I used to never even bother looking at the weekly specials.  Now I meal plan around the weekly specials.  I mostly shop at Publix or Food Lion.  Both of them have their weekly specials online, and you can add the specials straight to a grocery list from there.

Meal Plan.  Plan out your meals for the week, and make a list accordingly.  I won’t go into all the details about meal planning in this post, but it goes hand in hand with grocery shopping.  I used to wait until I went to the store to decide what I wanted to fix for supper.  It was terrible.  I would always end up forgetting something and have to make ANOTHER trip to the store. Plan, plan, plan!

Shopping List.  Before every shopping trip, I make a list on the Publix website.  The list automatically groups items that are in the same area of the store and its tells you what aisle to find them on.  This has literally saved me so much time.  I don’t have to search for things and I am able to easily see what all I need to get on that specific aisle.  Check your grocery store’s website to see if they have something similar.  Also, make sure you stick to your shopping list.  This will prevent you from over spending and wasting time in the store.

Only use coupons for the things you need.  Just because you have a coupon for it doesn’t mean you need to buy it.  I am by no means a coupon person, but I do use a few here and there.  For both Publix and Food Lion, you can upload coupons to your  savings card/account so that you don’t have to clip them and carry them around with you.

Don’t shop when you are hungry.  WORST IDEA EVER.  You will end up buying all kinds of crap you don’t need.  Just don’t do it!

Shop your own pantry first.  Before heading out to the store, check your own pantry, fridge, and freezer to make sure you don’t already have the items that are on your list.  Try to use up what you have before going to buy more.  It will save you money and space in your pantry.

Amazon Prime.  For items that we need every month, I do Subscribe and Save on Amazon Prime.  You can get discounts when you have at least 5 items on your auto ship order.  I have cat food, dog food, diapers, and a few other household essentials on our Subscribe and Save order.  Those are a few less items you have to worry about getting while at the store.  It’s a bonus not to have to carry big bags of dog food!

Below you will find two FREE printables to help you with grocery shopping.  The first one is a one page printable that has a menu on one side and a grocery list on the other.  The second one is a printable you can use along with your planner.  Just cut out the weekly menu and paper clip it to the inside of your planner.
