Strength & Dignity: A Proverb 31 Woman {Part 9}

In part 9 of this series we look at verse 18.  The verse says: She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.  I know you are probably thinking, how in the world does the Proverbs 31 woman get up really early, do all her work, and then go to bed late.  Remember that she did not do all these things in one day.  They were things she did over her lifetime.

There may be seasons in your life that require more effort on your part.  For example, if the timing is right for you to start a business then you may have to put in extra hours at night to meet certain deadlines.  Or maybe it is a season in your life of working outside the home, and you have to stay up later to make sure daily chores are done, that lunches are prepared for the next day, etc. Or maybe you are in a season of life where it is best to go to bed early to get extra rest.

I think the thing to take away from this verse is that if something needed to be done, the Proverbs 31 woman made it happen.  Even if that meant staying up later at night.  She adjusted her schedule to make sure things were taken care of.

Also remember that staying up late back then was most likely different then our definition of staying up late now.  Going to bed late could be considered 10:00 pm.  I think it just really depends on your responsibilities and what it takes to get them done.

Just thinking about the Proverbs 31 woman makes me tired sometimes.  I think it is important to point out that we are not meant to over exert ourselves and to stretch ourselves too thin.  It is about managing your time wisely, saying no to things that can wait, prioritizing the important things, taking care of ourselves, and helping our families thrive.

Strength & Dignity Part 9 action item:

Do you feel overwhelmed or stretched too thin?  Look at your schedule this week and schedule some time for self-care.  Take care of yourself so that you can better take care of those you love.
