Strength & Dignity: A Proverbs 31 Woman {Part 20}

In part 20 of this series, we look at verse 30.  The verse says: Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Another one of my favorite verses and a popular one from this passage.  This verse is such a good reminder that it is way more important to be beautiful on the inside than it is to be beautiful on the outside.

In this day and age it is so easy to get caught in the comparison trap.  Now that social media is such a big part our lives, we hear and see so much more than we used to.  We see that woman on Instagram who has a bikini perfect body two weeks after having a baby and automatically think negatively about ourselves.  We think our lives have to be Pinterest perfect or that we have to have all the same clothes as the up and coming Instagram style blogger.  Comparison is the thief of joy.  We will never be happy with our own appearance if we keep comparing ourselves to those perfectly edited Instagram photos.  It is so easy to get caught in that trap.  I know it has been a struggle for me.

I think it is important that we guard our hearts and our minds from getting caught up in the social media comparison trap.  If you follow an account that makes you feel worse about yourself every time you see their pictures, then quit following them.  Or maybe you need to do a social media cleanse and just stay off of it for a while.

The truth is that looks will fade.  Outward beauty does not last, but inner beauty does.  Focus on becoming more beautiful on the inside.  You can do that by reading the Bible, praying, becoming a more positive person, being kind, helping others, saying things that build others up, and learning when to hold your tongue.

When it comes to marriage, I think it is important for wives to still make themselves attractive to their husbands.  We shouldn’t let ourselves go after we get married. BUT the thing that will really make your marriage stronger is putting God first.  Striving to have a good relationship with Him.  Seeking His will for your life.  Having a gospel centered atmosphere in your home.  Raising your children to love the Lord.  These are the things that matter, that will strengthen your marriage, and help you find joy in life.

Strength & Dignity Part 20 action item:

Go through your social media accounts and unfollow people that ignite negative thoughts to creep into your mind.  Guard your heart and mind against that negativity.
